For our family, the Mepkin Abbey Creche Festival is a hallmark of the Christmas season. We secure our spots as soon as reservations are open and see it as the kickoff to the holidays.
If you’ve never visited Mepkin Abbey, it is one of the most beautiful spots in the Lowcountry. Located on a high bluff overlooking a peaceful river, it is the perfect place for a retreat from the hustle-bustle of daily life. Check out these photos of the lush gardens scattered throughout the property.
The monks of Mepkin Abbey devote their lives to prayer, spiritual study, work and hospitality. Once famous for their eggs, Mepkin Abbey now grows mushrooms that are featured in top restaurants around the city.
Mepkin Abbey opens its gates to almost 10,000 visitors during the Creche Festival. On display are close to 60 intricate nativity scenes from all over the world. Many are placed outdoors along Mepkin Abbey’s meandering garden paths, while the remainder are displayed inside the library. The creches each have a special personality and the materials used often reflect the country of origin.
I’ve included some of of the more memorable ones below. If you make it to the festival, be sure to check out my favorite (#42)!
