Be A Tourist in Your Own Town is one of the best-kept secrets for Charleston residents. I first heard about it when I was in Leadership Charleston a few years ago. I thought it was a great idea but, frankly, I forgot all about it. Chad and I were trying to come up with a great Christmas gift for my brother and sister-in-law who had just moved to Charleston in October. We wanted to do something that would help them to get a taste of the city we love so much. This was the perfect gift! For the month of January, residents are able to purchase a pass to visit local attractions for $20/ individual or $50 for a family. What a great deal! You also get discounts at several local restaurants. Like most of our friends, we find that we only go to local attractions when we have guests in town. This was a cool opportunity to take in some of the fabulous attractions in our great city on our own. So… we’ve made a schedule for this month and are going to take advantage of every opportunity to be tourists in our own town!
The Fire Museum and Educational Center was the first item on the list of things to do. What a cool place to visit! Especially for little boys. It was somewhat dark in there so the photos below aren’t great but it was a TON of fun!
Next, it was on to see the Hunley Museum. For those who don’t know, the H.L. Hunley was a submarine used in the Civil War that mysteriously sank off the coast of Charleston in 1864 after attacking and sinking the USS Housatonic (a Union blockade ship). All eight of the Hunley’s crewmembers drowned. The famous novelist, Clive Cussler, found the wreck with a diving team in 1995. Since then, it has been kept in North Charleston where scientists are carefully working on the sub.
After that, it was time for a break at Riverfront Park in North Charleston. I’ve mentioned before that my boys are infatuated with container ships. Well, it doesn’t get much better than this:
We should get out here more often. Riverfront Park is really pretty and is a lot of fun.
Back home on Daniel Island, we planned or next excursion. Looks like we are headed to the Birds of Prey Center in Awendaw. Stay tuned for more details…
