Downtown Daniel Island is definitely taking shape! This map is a great overview of the development plan. I’m excited about the new road that will connect Island Park Drive to River Landing Drive. I think it will radically change traffic patterns and will provide an alternate route to 526E.
When we moved to Daniel Island back in 2001, we knew the landscape and streetscape would change dramatically as the development plan unfolded. However, we had no idea how beautifully it would come together!
I believe the higher density in our downtown is a boon to residents. Additional traffic will remain in the town center area but we get the benefit of becoming more attractive to retailers (yay!) who have stayed away because we haven’t quite had the population to support a thriving retail center. Our restaurants do very well due to our daytime workforce but we can all agree that retail has lagged behind where we would like it to be.
Can’t wait to see entrepreneurs open up new businesses. Sure would love to see a hardware store, a cooking supply shop (Coastal Cupboard, anyone??), a toy store, a outdoor shop (Half Moon? Backpacker?) and, of course, a great bakery and deli! What would you like to see?
