Acts 20:35 says, “…It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Three charities are putting actions to those words this holiday season. Read more about how you can get involved this holiday season – with time, money, or both!
1. The Charleston Basket Brigade
This volunteer organization, founded in 2008, delivers and feeds Thanksgiving dinner to low income families in the Charleston area. All of the monies raised will go toward food. Since it’s conception, they have grown exponentially – starting with just 75 families to over 3500 families the past two years in a row. The great news?? It only costs $30 to feed a family (4-6 people.) $30!!! I’m sure many of us will sit down to generous Thanksgiving spreads in a few weeks. 2. HALOS – Helping and Lending Outreach Support
HALOS (Helping And Lending Outreach Support) is a local non-profit organization that provides assistance to abused and neglected children in Charleston County and to their caregivers year-round. Through a variety of programs and initiatives, they help to improve the lives of these children. Each year HALOS sponsors over 1000 children through their HALOS Holiday Trees along with many families who can be “adopted” for the holidays because they are struggling to simply make ends meet day to day. The HALOS Holiday programs are about the spirit of giving – not only tangible gifts but also the gifts of hope and love. Without the HALOS Holiday Tree, many of these children and families would have nothing for Christmas. To find out more about this organization, see their website at CharlestonHALOS.org.
Daniel Island Real Estate and the Daniel Island Property Owners Association (POA) are proud to support this amazing effort again this year! If you would like to sponsor a child, please stop by either one of our offices and pick out a tag/name. The children range in age for 0-18. On each tag, you will see the child’s ages and wish list. Please know that the wishes are suggestions that either the child or caseworker made, but by no means do they expect to receive these things. These children are grateful for anything they receive.
If you “adopt” a child, please be sure you securely attach a copy of the child’s tag to the gift(s). Gifts can be dropped off at either the POA office or Daniel Island Real Estate on or before Monday, December 1st.
3. Operation Christmas Child
This opportunity was started by Samaritan’s Purse, an organization who helps people around the world. It was founded in 1970 to aid victims of war, natural disasters, disease, poverty, and famine with the purpose of creating avenues to share the Gospel of Christ. “Operation Christmas Child” is a special holiday project, where shoeboxes filled with toys, treats, and even small clothing items, are sent to gospel partners around the world to distribute to children in need. The organization even provides a tracking label, so you can find out where your package ends up. Feel free to drop these off at East Cooper Baptist Church in the next week. The deadline for getting these to a drop off location is soon, so go to their website and learn about more ways you can give.
