Traffic Circle on Daniel Island

By now, the new traffic circle that will be coming soon to Daniel Island is old news. But the need for it is constantly being validated.  Just a few weeks ago, two teenage girls were hit while trying to make it across the intersection of Daniel Island Drive and Seven Farms Drive. Thankfully the injuries were minor, but situations like this with impatient pedestrians crossing illegally and vehicles trying to “beat the red light” happen far too often. As Daniel Island grows and expands, the influx of traffic demands a new solution to this crucial intersection.

At the January 11th Berkeley County Council Meeting (link to full meeting agenda here,) the conceptual design was discussed with a price tag of around $200,000, covered from the Berkeley County Penny Sales Tax fund. Additional sketches were provided at the January 25th County Council Meeting (link to that agenda here.)

The two designs that were presented are below:

One Lane Design

Traffic Circle - One Lane Version

Two Lane Design

Traffic Circle - Two Lane Version

The goal is to have construction happen in the evening hours so as to disrupt the daytime traffic as much as possible. Plans are still being nailed down, but we hope to have this much-needed traffic circle by 2017! We’d love to hear from you – which design do you like better?
